TWO week SKin-on-frame Canoe Making Course (8-10 Days)
Construction of this Canoe will introduce you to skin-on-frame building techniques and hone your fine wood-working skills (though we can also teach your from scratch - no prior wood-working skills necessary). It’s an excellent way to get a taste of boatbuilding without committing to several months. The course includes construction of the canoe and two paddles, ready to go at the end of the course.

We can run this course on demand as well if you require other dates or a different length of period. Please use the contact form and let us know which dates you are available. We are currently taking requests up to the end of 2027.
Course Fee: $6,900 for a 17’ Canoe (Two Seater)
Participants: We recommend two participants per build.
Experience level: No experience required.
Course Details: The Course takes eight to ten days over a two week period. The first day starts at 10am and the rest of the week is arranged depending requirements.
Design Details:
17’ Skin on Frame Construction
Ballistic Nylon with urethane Coating
Marine Ply frame with various timbers for stringers, thwarts and detailing including Tasmanian timbers
The finished design will be approximately 25kg.
The Wooden Boat Centre has just completed another Skin-on-Frame built with two enthusiastic students. Sarah and the team constructed her from Oregon and Huon pine, wrapped in ballistic nylon.

We have the expertise, workshop space, tools and machinery to make your build a breeze and you will leave the Centre with a gorgeous lightweight boat ready to explore the beautiful lakes and waterways around the state. No experience is required, just a desire to learn and get hands-on in building your own boat!
There are a myriad of designs available online which we encourage you to explore until you find the one that suits you best. Then, get in touch and we can give you an idea of the material and tuition costs associated. As a general guide, most take between one and two weeks to complete with full tuition by a shipwright.
