New course starting in June!

three day greenwood shave horse course

Step into the workshop and experience the fundamentals of traditional green woodwork over three hands-on days. This course introduces the use of hand tools and working with greenwood and traditional Tasmanian timbers, shaping freshly felled timber using time-honoured techniques.

The Course

A traditional shave horse is a foot-powered clamp or giant vice. A must for anyone who would like to get creative with green wood and with this course you not only learn green wood working skills, but make one of the essential tools at the same time.

For this course we will use fresh green wood, wood that has not yet dried and is ideal for working with hand tools. Once assembled, the drying process, will make the wood, and with it the joints shrink, creating a solid construction.

Skills You'll Learn:

  • Essentials of green woodworking.

  • How to use a shave horse.

  • Working safely with hand tools - using draw knives and spoke shaves.

  • How to make the different parts and how to assemble.

The Wooden Boat Centre and its people:

You will be working in a dynamic workshop with multiple projects going on around you and we hope you will embrace the friendship and atmosphere of this very special place. There will be boats being built, restoration projects on the go and all sorts of other activities. We love to see new people come into the workshop and welcome all skill levels, all genders and ages 18 to 180.

If there was ever a place where you could come to join in and be part of a community of like-minded people who simply love wood, love wooden boats and want to preserve traditional skills, this is it.
