Course Intake for 2025 is open!
Introduction to fine woodworking
This two-week course teaches fundamentals like tool safety, timber selection and basic joinery. We provide the tools and teach you the skills! You’ll learn how to sharpen your tools, marking out, sawing, planing, chiselling and you’ll get to practice joinery. You get the option to to make your own tool box or picture frame to take away. The course will dive in the use of hand tools only and will give you the opportunity to get comfortable with chisels and planes.
Key Skills You'll Learn:
Tool Mastery: Safe operation of tools, sharpening, and maintenance.
Wood Knowledge: Understanding different wood types, properties, and how to select them.
Joinery: Basic and advanced methods like dovetails, essential for strong, beautiful furniture.
This course is run by Tim Blumfield, an experienced craftsman who has maintained his love of wood and the traditional techniques over many years since learning his trade in the city of York where he worked on restoration and joinery projects.
Start from nothing and learn the fundamentals of joinery, build a toolbox and come a way with practical experience.
You will be working in a dynamic workshop with multiple projects going on around you and we hope you will embrace the friendship and atmosphere of this very special place. There will be boats being built, restoration projects on the go and all sorts of other activities. We love to see new people come into the workshop and welcome all skill levels, all genders and ages 18 to 180.
If there was ever a place where you could come to join in and be part of a community of like-minded people who simply love wood, love wooden boats and want to preserve traditional skills, this is it.
