Iola

Iola is a Tamar Cod Boat, which came to the school in 2021 and has been restored by volunteers and students over the last two years. A cabin section that was added in the last 20 odd years was removed and Iola has been rebuilt her to her original 1940’s lines, with a nod to the Couta style of boat.

Students have rebuilt her entire deck, with new beams, carlins, hanging and lodging knees. Covered in ply and glass the deck has been over-laid with Celery Top pine and caulked with polyurethane. The completed restoration was displayed at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2023 and then taken home.

The Montagu Whaler

A 27' Whaler, number 536 built in Brisbane in 1953. This vessel now back in active use by the Franklin community under the custodianship of the Living Boat Trust. Originally planked in Kauri, but restored with Huon Pine planking.

Annella

A traditional Cray boat of Tasmania, from Bicheno. Annella came to the boat school to have her wet well removed and her deck repaired. We completed the hull repair replacing her planking like-for-like with swamp gum planking.

The deck repair is complete and a new cabin replaces the wheel house with a touch more room for a small galley and seating out of the weather.

The wet well is the new engine room, allowing for a drop down floor in the wheel house and ample head room. The forepeak will remain as a V-berth, overall giving Annella a new lease of life.

Undine

Undine is a Derwent class, and she is a joint project between the Wooden Boat Centre and the Australian Wooden Boat Festival team. Together we are restoring her to her former glory. Over the years she has had an extra 3 planks added to her sheer to give her more cabin space and a speedy looking reverse sheer.

Unfortunately that additional timber (Oregon) has not lasted as well as the original Huon pine planking. Our hard working volunteers completely removed the additional structure and returned her to her original beautiful sheer.

Over the last six months our team have been working around the clock to complete her restoration to enable her to be launched at the Kettering Wooden Boat Rally in February 2024.
