Clinker dinghy construction with Mike Johnson

The Viking Boat - Double ended clinker sailing dinghy with Pete Laidlaw

Students will construct an 18' double ended clinker rowing and sailing dinghy to a traditional Viking design.  This will be made of rare Tasmanian boatbuilding timbers, predominately Huon Pine.  This is a rare opportunity for students to be part of a traditional Viking boat build.

Course duration: Eight weeks or week blocks during the course

Tuition fees: $4,800 for eight weeks or $600 per week

The boat build is being sponsored by a Sydney based Viking boat enthusiast.  It will also feature carved features - dragons head and tail and shields (these carved elements will be outsourced, not made by the students).

Carvel 12 1/2' dinghy workboat with Mike Johnson

Students will build a fishing workboat with fish well of traditional design.  This rowing dinghy will be built of rare Tasmanian boat building timbers to a design similar to the dinghy donated by the Parker family and made by Spence Harrison in 1950.

Replace a section of the Garboard Strakes on 'Yukon' with David Nash

Students will be part of the team that carries out routine structural maintenance work to the 1930 built 17m Danish Fishing Ketch 'Yukon'.  The work will be carried out on the slip at Woodbridge with students and instructors travelling across each day.  This is a rare opportunity to gain skills in wooden ship maintenance  whilst removing old planks, steaming, fitting, re-caulking and refinishing the 7m section of the Garboard Strakes as part of a scheduled maintenance of a large commercial sailing vessel.

Course duration: Five days

Working Green Timber with Pete Laidlaw

Students will travel out into the forest to select green timber to make a chair. Living Treasure Course: Adrian Deans' Designed Clinker

Assist the build of an Adrian Dean designed Clinker Dinghy.
Participants will assist Adrian to build a Huon Pine Clinker Dinghy of Adrian's design. Adrian will assist and advise the build as he is available (most days). The course will be broken up into one-week blocks over a nine-week duration, with participants joining the course for varied periods.

Course Duration: 9 weeks, however attendance can be a minimum of 1 week with any variation. Course content and schedule to be advised>
