Facilities

The Wooden Boat Centre has three boatbuilding workshops and an adjoining visitor interpretation centre at Franklin.
There is also a small library with a good selection of books and periodicals dealing with timber, design, boatbuilding, maritime history and literature.

Boat school students work on the boats using static and power toolsThe Wooden Boat Centre provides static woodworking tools and power tools. There is also a selection of hand tools, however students are expected to acquire and use their own hand tools as soon as practicable.

Visitor Centre

The Wooden Boat centre has a visitor interpretation centre to enable visitors to view the construction of boats without disturbing students.
Here visitors can browse the exhibits and purchase Wooden Boat Centre products.

Educational Standards

Practical course components involving major building or repair of boats will be assessed by external qualified marine surveyors to ensure the highest professional standards. For courses leading to a certificate, all assessment criteria are clearly defined, and assessment confirms the student's development and application of skills and knowledge over time.

Admission

The courses detailed in the prospectus are designed for adults. Entry is competitive. There are no deferrals. Admission will be granted on the basis of equal opportunity, probability of the achievement of outcomes, determination to complete the course and gain the qualification, and ability to meet costs, as judged by a selection panel of core staff.

Scholarships

The Wooden Boat Centre actively seeks scholarships to assist students with tuition fees. Several scholarships have been donated in the past and others may become available in the future.
Details of scholarships to be awarded for the next course are provided in the Prospectus.

Cancellation

The Wooden Boat Centre reserves the right to cancel the course in the event of insufficient enrolments, or emergency. Deposits and/or fees paid in advance will be refunded in respect of the whole or any part of the course that is cancelled.

Student Accommodation

The Wooden Boat Centre accepts no responsibility for finding student accommodation, but will assist students where possible.

Insurance

A student at work on a boat at the wooden boat schoolThe Wooden Boat Centre has public liability cover, and insures students against personal accident. Students are responsible for their own tools and/or personal possessions left on the Wooden Boat Centre’s property during the course.
