Decking
Cabin carlines are followed by side deck framing, corner posts and cabin sides and porthole fitting. Traditional and modern methods may be combined at this stage. The deck may be laid on marine plywood or may be canvassed, or sheathed with dynel or fibreglass. The cabin will be made. Bulwark stanchions, bulwarks and capping rail or toe rail are fitted after decking is complete.
Spar making and rigging
The mast may be solid or hollow, with a solid boom and spars appropriate to the design of the sail plan. The mast construction demands a high standard of workmanship and may provide an opportunity to apply modern glueing options. Rigging is a specialised trade in itself but boatbuilders need to understand the basic components and have some experience of fitting them.
Launching
If possible this will be accomplished using the traditional methods of cradle, skids, wedges, mauls etc to enable students to learn the principles of shifting heavy objects in a safe and systematic manner using simple technology. However, the safest and most practical method of launching will be chosen taking all factors into consideration.
