TWB2: SMALL BOAT DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION

Contact time: 140 hours

This subject is an introduction to the design of small boats. It will teach the student to read, understand and interpret boat designs from lines plans and other drawings, in order to be able to translate those plans into full-sized lines and construct a vessel from them. Topics included are: simple hull shapes and how they are drawn; calculations from designers’ information; interpreting drawn lines and tables into actual shapes; lofting a simple hull shape for construction.

The bulk of the time in this module then deals with building a simple dinghy using hard chine construction. This will be undertaken in small groups of two or three, and while the joy and sense of achievement attached to completing a simple vessel is an important learning outcome, the principal purpose of the exercise is to understand the entire process of converting lines drawings to a three-dimensional shape, prior to tackling the same process in the major project vessel.
